Well I had a problem with our Hard drive deciding to not die but not write all the time and lose data occasionally. So I had to buy a new one to replace the old one cause the computer was running so slow. Well I finally knew I needed to replace it when I was trying to fix it and it wouldn’t format or partition. So after about a week of not being on the computer I finally got the new drive for it.
Apple was going to charge alot to put a new drive in and to buy a new drive from them so I knew I could do it so I went searching for a drive. The iMac G5 uses a 3.5in sata 2 drive, 7500rpm. So I went searching knowing that. Well they use Hitachi but I wasn’t going to buy one cause I couldn’t find one and they’re an expensive brand. I knew seagate made one and so I went and found one. The hard drive that died was 400GB so I didn’t want bigger than that since I hadn’t even used that space. Well the seagate was 500GB so when I went back to buy it they no longer had it. So I searched around and actually bought a Western Digital Caviar SE16, It’s the same specs as my old drive except it’s 500 GB.
So I got home opened up the mac, took out the fan that leads to the processor so I could get the drive out easily, took off the mounting brackets for the drive and put the new one in and put it all back together.
The disk is blank so I had to boot off my OSX disc and use disk utility and format the drive to Mac OS Extended. When it was done I hit install and it worked fine.
Now my computer is running alot faster and I have 100GB’s more storage so thats cool. I’m going to try and fix the old drive and make it an external so that will be nice.
I really wish I was not so excited and would have documented my steps with pictures so I could better describe this. But if anyone needs help let me know and I will walk you through this the best I can.
I’m alot happier replacing it myself and we saved alot of money doing it that way.
P.S. Your going to need some Torx head screwdrivers to take off the mounting brackets for the drive.
Well feel free to ask questions and I’ll help out the best I can.
